Can ai replace personal training?

AI is most certainly a hot topic right now. And its applications seem endless. Whether you need an image or a paper written. There’s an AI platform that can get the job done. But what about fitness? Can AI do as good of a job or better than a real live trainer?

We put this idea to the test. I had ChatGPT write me a full body no equipment workout.

And I must say, it was pretty good. PRETTY good. While I think this workout would be serviceable, especially for a beginner, ChatGPT didn’t seem to be considering overlap. Meaning it would put two exercises that trained the same body part in succession. This isn’t the worst thing and there are times where it may be appropriate. Most of the time, you would want to program exercises that train different body parts. Allowing the original muscle to rest while you work on the other and vice versa.

So if you’re just looking for a general workout, ChatGPT isn’t a bad option. However, there’s one area where AI certainly loses to personal training. Keep in mind, it’s called personal training. Personal.

This is one piece of advice I always give upcoming trainers. Yes, you need to know your stuff. Have an intimate knowledge of the research and the science of how the body works. But you can have a PhD as a personal trainer and not be successful. Half the battle is the personal aspect. As a trainer, you have to make sure the client enjoys your company and wants to spend multiple hours per week with you one on one. Many trainers and clients spend more one on one time with each other than they will with their family and friends.

From the client perspective, receiving real time feedback and adjustments is massively valuable. AI can’t assess your form (yet). It can’t tailor your squat to suit your body’s proportions. And, most importantly, it can’t keep you accountable.

So can AI replace a personal trainer? No. Can it provide an alternative that’s cheaper, but not as good? Yes.

I should also add that this is not to say every personal trainer is good. I would go as far as saying most of them are terrible. But having an appointment set in which you are going to meet up with someone who will coach you through a workout will drive people out of their homes and into the gym. And showing up at the gym consistently is the first giant step toward seeing results.
